How to spot a phishing email

Phishing emails pretend to be someone you trust to get you to click a link, open an attachment, pay an invoice or enter your password. Warning signs:

  • Urgency or threats: "your account will be closed", "payment overdue", "act now"
  • A sender address that does not match the company, or is slightly misspelled
  • Links that go somewhere unexpected. Hover over a link (or long-press on a phone) to see the real address before clicking
  • Unexpected attachments, invoices or shared documents
  • Requests to change banking details, buy gift cards, or keep something confidential
  • A login page asking for your password after you clicked a link in an email

When in doubt, do not click. Contact the sender using a phone number or website you already know, not the details in the email.
